Opening in 1987, the Sub Club sits deep below street level, entered from a door on Jamaica Street in Glasgow's City Centre. For over 30 years it's been both hosting and launching some of the world's most renowned DJ's within it's well established walls. It has a phenomenally loyal crowd, is regularly voted one of the world's best clubs, and is a bit of a rite of passage for many Glaswegians and also new recruits to the city.
I can't speak for the here and now, but in my day its bouncers weren't shy of a knock-back at the door, so if you wanted in you had to be on your A-game. The result was often more than a few dejected-looking, possibly slightly squiffy individuals hanging about by the door, reassessing their plans for the night, while the rest of the queue looked on hoping they wouldn't have the same bad luck. It's discreet door and lack of 'street presence' meant that you never knew exactly what you were getting until you were through those doors, down the stairs and feeling the force of the heat, the lights, the crowd and the music hitting you.
These hand drawings, by Turadh Design Co, depict a selection of nightclubs, past and present. What better way to get record a special memory than with a drawing of the location itself!
The prints are hand-drawn and digitally rendered. Framed artworks and loose artwork prints can make a great addition to your home or make fantastic gifts for the special people in your life.
